Maths

At Lilliput Infants, we believe that all children can succeed in Maths. By building confidence, resilience and a passion for maths, we show that maths is an exciting adventure that everyone can enjoy, value and master. Children learn Maths through a Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract (CPA) approach- a highly effective approach to teaching, that develops a deep and sustainable understanding of Maths in children. Our classrooms are well resourced with a variety of manipulatives which support mathematical thinking and encourages the children to explain their reasoning.

In our maths lessons we follow the White Rose Maths scheme and supplement content with extra challenges from the NCETM, the DFE Ready-to-Progress materials, Nrich and other excellent resources. The teachers build in opportunities to review previous learning and model strategies and stem sentences for the children which are then displayed to support them.

This year, in addition to our maths lessons, all year groups are also participating in the Mastering Number Programme that has been funded by the Department for Education and developed by the NCETM and Maths Hubs. These daily 15 minute sessions aim to develop key fluency work by teaching the children to subitise, recall number bonds, times tables, doubles etc and maximises the use of stem sentences and mathematical vocabulary. It also explores methods the children will need to apply to their maths and misconceptions.

The children also love the weekly Mathletics tasks that are set and these provide them with opportunities for embedding and revisiting previously taught content. Certificates are then shared with the whole school during our Stars assembly on a Friday.
